What is a Baraat/Bharaat?
DEFINITION: A baraat is a celebratory wedding procession for the groom involving live music and dancing. While it does not hold religious significance, it is an important custom nonetheless.
History of Baraats.
Back in the old country/motherland (India) often it is tradition for the Groom to get married in the Brides hometown. The Grooms procession would often meet in the Grooms town and start the Baraat often riding on a horse or elephant accompanied by drummers, musicians and family members who would dance to the Brides town in a sort of parade. In the Western world, usually an important highlight of the wedding is the bride’s entrance to the wedding which is often elegant. When the Groom shows up with his baraat, it is loud and energetic!
Modern Day Baraats.
Today, in the US, the custom of Baraats have change a little bit. Rather than making the journey all the way from the Grooms town to the Brides town, often the distance is much shorter for the Grooms procession, and usually last no more than 1 hour. Although some do still opt to enter on a horse or Elephant, today many have chosen to arrive in Exotic cars such as Ferraris, Lamborghinis and Rolls Royces. Also, instead of having a live band, have transitioned to having Indian Wedding DJs with mobile Baraat / Bharaat systems accompanied by Dhol (drummers) players.
